So what is Cellulite and

can we get rid of it?

Cellulite is no one’s friend. Anyone that has cellulite, or the dimpling of the skin on the thighs, rear end, and even the lower leg area, knows that it is embarrassing and unsightly. And they no doubt want to get rid of it!

Cellulite is basically fat that is sticking out into the dermis from lower layers in the skin. It gives that dimpled look, sometimes known as a “cottage cheese” appearance, to the skin. Nearly all women (85-98%) have some amount of cellulite on their bodies. It is more common in white females, and it also seems to have some type of hormonal factor about it, because men rarely become afflicted with it.

Cellulite, however, is not a symptom of being overweight. Average-sized and even underweight individuals can have cellulite. The exact cause of it is not known, unfortunately. There are some theories that suggest that it could be diet-related, and that eating foods high in trans fats, and foods like pasta and white bread products can cause cellulite to appear.

As you would expect, there are many so-called remedies on the market that claim to reduce or eliminate altogether. Lotions, gels, and even pills are sold en masse by cosmetics companies to consumers every year. The fact is, though, that there is no real proof that any of these “remedies” do anything to remove cellulite. Even liposuction, which is the surgical removal of fat from the body, cannot combat cellulite!

There are some types of massage that might help to reduce the appearance of cellulite temporarily. Because it is a subcutaneous fat, meaning it is located just under the skin, it has no blood vessels. Massage often helps to improve circulation just under the skin, thus smoothing out the skin’s surface. This temporarily reduces the appearance of cellulite, but does not get rid of it.

What seems to help the battle with cellulite is to follow a generally healthy lifestyle. Eat a well-balanced diet, drink a lot of water every day, and exercise regularly. Even though you can’t fight Mother Nature, you can give her a really hard time, and you might find that the cellulite that has plagued you will reduce in appearance, and even go away to some degree!
