Complications & Risks Of Bariatric Surgery

1. Gastric stomach surgery is a major surgical procedure, where complications can cause death in about 1 percent of cases.

2. As in any major surgery the risk of complications are-

  • Blood clots in the lung (pulmonary embolism)

  • Breathing problems

  • Infections in the incision

  • Vomiting

  • Leaking from the suture lines may complicate bowel

  • surgery, causing peritonitis, but the incidence of this occurring is small.

  • Bleeding

  • Nutritional deficiency condition such as anaemia or

  • osteoporosis

  • Anaesthetics problems may occur as in any major

  • operation

  • Vomiting or straining after surgery before the incision

  • heals can cause a hernia. Laproscopy assisted surgery greatly reduces hernia
  • risk.

  • Hiccups and bloating may occur due to the enlargement of

  • the bypassed stomach

3. Bariatric surgery causes a condition called as Dumping syndrome,

This condition is also called "rapid gastric emptying"

Dumping syndrome occurs when the lower section of the small intestine (jejunum) fills up too quickly with undigested food from the stomach, causing unpleasant digestive effects.

Complications & Risks Of Bariatric Surgery

This condition may be caused as the surgery changes the anatomy and normal digestive functioning of the stomach sometimes that of the small intestine.

And may also reduce the amount of digestive juices from the stomach and pancreas.

Dumping syndrome can also be triggered in gastric surgery patients by consumption of simple carbohydrates (sugar, or some starches) or carbohydrates with a high glycemic index.

There are two variants of rapid gastric emptying: early and late dumping.

Early dumping typically starts during or immediately after a meal with symptoms like-

1. Abdominal cramps
2. Bloating
3. Palpitations
4. Nausea
5. Vomiting
6. Diarrhoea
7. Shortness of breath


Late dumping typically occurs 1-3 hours after eating with symptoms like

1. Weakness
2. Dizziness
3. Fatigue
